And in the System Restore there are multiple C:Drive entries one with Operating system written after and the other 2 say missing Is this a problem with sectors of my hard disk, and why has the disk check not picked it up or is there something i can do to recover the missing space. How satisfied are you with this reply? I apologize if my computer lingo is less than stellar. I'm learning as I go: Unaccounted for, disappearing hard drive space on Windows Vista. Ran the vssadmin list shadowstorage command, changed how much shadow files can be stored, and still nothing. I have about 2GB of programs installed, 40GB of media, documents, and pictures total, no viruses, have run the disk defrag, disk cleanup, and emptied recycle. I still show only 37GB of GB free.
My WD External hard drive says that the bulk of my memory is taken up by "system files," but I can't find files to delete. As I said, I have malware protection, have done complete scans, and no viruses or infected files are found. I changed my shadow storage to 15GB, but my hard drive space didn't improve one bit. I'm not in a position to afford a professional to diagnose and fix the problem, so I'm open to any and all suggestions.
TSilk Thread Starter. Joined May 29, Messages 4. I should have multiple GB of space on my C drive however it only shows around MB free, whenever I attempt to update windows like trying to install SP1 or install a game the HD space will dwindle to 0 bytes free causing the installations to fail. Does anyone know what could be causing this annoying process? Joined Nov 6, Messages 1, I hate to state the obvious but it sounds your disk is nearly full. Why are you so sure you should have multiple GB of free space?
Have you tried freeing up some space by clearing out unnecessary files to see if your reported free space goes up? Also whenever I go to install important updates the HD space dwindles to 0 which causes the updates to fail. There's lots of things we can check but I need to know these things. DaveA David. Have you checked the "Recycle Bin" to see if they are there? As a delete will put a copy in there until, it is emptied. Good point Dave. Still, even if they were in the recycle bin, the space they took up before deletion would be counted as free space.
If not, then something is seriously screwy. The C: Drive where vista is installed is the one getting its memory "eaten". I cut and pasted the files to the F: drive music files and my recycle bin is empty. Nothing comes up on the numerous malware scans I've run once i contacted DAL www. My shadowcopy was at 17 GB and I changed it to 2 and I haven't seen an increase in available memory.
I'm not sure whats going on. Personally, I don't like what I'm hearing about "shadow" copies, I don't like "goback" type software, I don't even recommend using windows system restore.
